Shocking rule switch completely changes McGregor-Mayweather

It wasn’t so much a boast as it was matter of fact, with Conor McGregor knowing the best way for him to beat Floyd Mayweather on Aug. 26 is with his superior punching power.

And that advantage, no matter how lonesome it is, was given a boost when the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) agreed Wednesday to requests from both fighters and allowed them use eight-ounce gloves instead of the 10-ounce gloves normally used for their weight class.

“I believe now that the gloves are eight ounces, I don’t believe he makes it out of the second round,” McGregor said on a conference call Wednesday night. “Part of me is hoping maybe he can last so I can [deal with] the word of, ‘Oh, he’s a lucky [puncher],’ and that sort of thing, which I’ve been labeled with before. Part of me kind of wants to show some skill and dismantle him that way, but I do not see him absorbing the blows in the first two rounds.

“But we are ready for absolutely every scenario. We’re ready to go to war for the full 12 rounds, and I’m ready to put him away in the first 10 seconds. So that’s where my heads at.”

Coming out of UFC, McGregor is used to fighting with four-ounce gloves that are fingerless and have very little padding. Of course, he’s also used to being able to kick and grapple. There is the flip side of this decision, as well, with Mayweather having the faster hands and the smaller gloves allowing him to take advantage of that aspect.

“I fight in four-ounce gloves, fingerless gloves, with the knuckles barely covered is what I’m used to,” McGregor said. “It benefits both in certain ways. So I’m very happy with it.”

MAYWEATHER VS. MCGREGOR BETTING ODDS BREAKDOWN: WHY YOU SHOULD BET MAYWEATHER

Aug 15, 2017 |
By: JASON LOGAN

There are three annual events on the sports calendar in which the mainstream media welcomes sports betting with open arms and opinions: Super Bowl, March Madness and the Kentucky Derby.

There is, however, a fourth occasion that pops up every so often – like the August 21 solar eclipse – that has the 24/7 sports news cycle spitting out odds like a Las Vegas wiseguy: a big prize fight. And by the sounds of it, no fight in history will be bigger than Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Conor McGregor.

That statement is a little crazy, considering the most-hyped boxing bout of all time involves only one real boxer. Mayweather is unquestionably one of the greatest to step between the ropes, and is arguably the top defensive boxer the sport has ever seen.

The guy is a ghost in the ring, with elite footwork, hand speed and overall boxing smarts mixing together for a potent counter-punching potion that brings Mayweather into this August 26 fight with an unblemished record of 49-0 and has only seen the five-division title holder in trouble a handful of times during his 21-year career.

That’s why Mayweather opened as a -10,000 favorite when this matchup with MMA star McGregor was rumored in May 2016 – a realistic line for such a mismatch in boxing skill. This line has since morphed into a reflection of the sportsbooks’ need to have “public friendly” odds on the biggest fight ever as well as the mainstream support for McGregor – with a heaping of hatred for Mayweather stirred in.

Regardless of the current odds, Mayweather is the overwhelming favorite and deservedly so. That makes giving three reasons why you should bet on Mayweather over McGregor very easy. Almost as easy as this fight should be for Floyd…

Reason No. 1: The odds

As mentioned above, this bout is priced for the public. Priced to sell, if you would. That opening line of Mayweather -10,000 is an unbettable number – asking bettors to wager $10,000 to only win $100. No sports gambler, sharp or square, would get involved in that.

That’s why when the fight was close to official, most sportsbooks either opened or adjusted their Mayweather-McGregor betting odds to Mayweather -1,000 with McGregor coming back as a +700 underdog. And even that was a lot to ask from the casual bettors – wagering $1,000 to win $100 on Mayweather – which explains the one-sided action on McGregor and the massive swing in the fight odds.

Public players and MMA enthusiast have piled on the Irishman, eyeing that underdog payday, betting McGregor with both fists in the months leading up to fight night. Those $10, $20, $50 and $100 bets have slowly accrued into a mountain of liability for sportsbooks, with the random large bet on Mayweather temporarily tempering the line adjustments.

You can now get Mayweather around -550, almost half the price of the opening line. To put those odds into perspective, Mayweather was a -3,500 fave versus Andre Berto in September 2015, a -230 favorite against Manny Pacquiao in May 2015, and around -1,000 in his second bout with Marcos Maidana back in September 2014.

Sure, Mayweather has been out of the gloves for some time since those bouts but he handled those world-class fighters with ease. Now he’s going against a first-time boxer and is discounted like Halloween candy on November 1.

As my colleague, Patrick Everson, wrote when the odds were Mayweather -1,000, “If this was your 401(k) plan or an IRA, you’d be thrilled at a 10 percent return on investment.” Now you’re getting almost 20 percent – minus the $100 bones to watch this bet cash live on pay-per-view.

Reason No. 2: The skill

We’ve already touched on Mayweather’s talents in the ring as well as his undefeated record. But despite those things and probably in good part to Mayweather’s polarizing personality, he still doesn’t get the credit he deserves.

Boxing purists and they’re now few and far between, will gladly rank Mayweather’s work in the ring among the all-time pound-for-pound best fighters. His out-of-ring antics and legal issues definitely tarnish what should be a celebrated sports career.

CompuBox statistics state that Mayweather has landed 43.4 percent of his career punches while limiting foes to just under 19 percent – a +24.5 plus/minus rating. Plus he’s only gotten better with age, taking down world-class competition in the final decade of his career.

Maloofs bet $880K on Mayweather to give winnings to charity

Gavin and Joe Maloof are so confident Floyd Mayweather Jr. will beat Conor McGregor that they bet $880,000 on it.

And if the Maloof brothers are big winners along with Mayweather on Aug. 26, they are giving the proceeds of their whopping wager to charity.

The wealthy entrepreneurs and former Sacramento Kings owners revealed their extraordinary bet to The Associated Press on Sunday, two days after they placed the wager at the South Point Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. The bet is thought to be the biggest yet made on the fight, which is expected to be Vegas’ biggest spectacle in recent years.

The Maloofs will make a $160,000 profit if Mayweather — a minus-550 favorite Friday — remains unbeaten against McGregor, the UFC champion making his pro boxing debut.

“I know a family that’s going to be watching this fight very, very closely,” Maloof said with a laugh.

Gavin Maloof told the AP that the family will donate the proceeds to multiple charities in Las Vegas and in Los Angeles, where sister Adrienne Maloof is active in charity work, in the name of Never Too Hungover, their widely distributed hangover prevention drink.

“We have a huge opportunity to help a lot of people in charities, so we decided to do it,” Gavin Maloof said. “It’s a neat way to enjoy the fight, and it’s a fun way to promote our product.”

Mayweather and Gavin Maloof are longtime neighbors, living down the street from each other in a tony Las Vegas suburb. Gavin went to a recent workout at Mayweather’s gym and emerged with overwhelming confidence that age hasn’t eroded the 40-year-old unbeaten champion’s skills, even after a two-year layoff.

“So I called my brother, Joe, and said, ‘We should put a wager on Floyd, because I don’t think he’s going to lose,'” Gavin said. “Not to take anything away from Conor. He’s good. But I just like Floyd a lot.”

The Maloofs spoke to the South Point sportsbook and settled on an $880,000 bet — a number that was initially too big to display properly on a betting ticket. The casino rewrote the bet into two $440,000 tickets that will pay out a total of $1.04 million if Mayweather wins.

The Maloofs are actually going against the betting trends on this potentially one-sided fight. Roughly 95 percent of the tickets and 85 percent of the money has been bet on McGregor in recent weeks, and Vegas sportsbooks likely are hoping many more bettors will follow the Maloofs’ lead to offset their extraordinary liability in the event of a shocking upset win by McGregor.

Gavin has attended Mayweather’s last dozen fights in person and watched everything the champion has ever done, so he feels confident in his bet. Yet he also sees how an upset could happen — which only makes it more exciting.

Golden Knights looking for anthem singers for home games

August 7, 2017 – 11:20 am

The Golden Knights are just 64 days from taking the ice at T-Mobile Arena for the team’s first home game.

But first, they need some national anthem singers.

“The presentation of the national anthem is a key part of the pregame tradition,” Golden Knights Vice President of Entertainment and Production Jonny Greco said in a news release. “We want to showcase all the talent we have here in Vegas, so we will have multiple singers performing throughout the season and serving an integral role in Golden Knights game entertainment.”

Requirements include submitting an application with your name, phone number, email and a link to a past performance. The team says ideal candidates will have singing experience and those who have performed the United States and Canadian anthems before will be given special consideration.

The Knights will hold live auditions at T-Mobile Arena for both solo artists and groups the week of Sept. 4.

Those interested can fill out an application online at nhl.com/goldenknights/info/nationalanthem.

Vegas Golden Knights’ practice facility close to completion

They were making ice Wednesday in Summerlin while sprucing up the outside and continuing to build upstairs.

Yes, the Golden Knights’ home is starting to look and feel like, well, home.

The two-rink practice facility, which has been branded City National Arena, is nearing completion. The 146,000-square-foot headquarters, which will cost between $25 million and $30 million to complete, will be ready for occupancy Aug. 25. More important, it will be ready for the team’s inaugural training camp, beginning with the rookie camp Sept. 8. Veterans report Sept. 14.

“We’re not quite at the finish line, but at least I can see the finish line,” said Murray Craven, the team’s senior vice president. “There’s probably still a month of work left. Nothing major, just some odds and ends. All the heavy lifting is done.”

Craven has overseen the project from its embryo stage, even picking the brain of his daughter Haley for what to include in the facility. The process included three location changes, delays for acquiring permits and lengthy negotiations with the Howard Hughes Corporation, which owns the land at the site, on the lease.

Construction did not begin in earnest until early November. But here in early August, the building is nearly ready for occupancy, on schedule and pretty much on budget.

“It’s a credit to everyone who worked on the project,” Craven said. “We had a tight time frame to work with, with the goal of being ready before training camp in September, and we met that goal.”

Craven, who played 17 seasons in the NHL, will take a test spin on the ice sometime Thursday afternoon. By the end of the week, the surface should be ready for play. Dan Patterson, who will be the building’s general manager, said the players will feel comfortable on the ice as well as off of it.

“We want it to be NHL-quality ice every day,” he said as workers continued to spray layers of water to the base to build it to a 1 1/2-inch thickness. “So we’re going to work hard to maintain the ice and the building in general.”

Defenseman Deryk Engelland came by Wednesday for a tour and left impressed.

“It’s amazing,” he said. “If you’re a player, it has everything you want in a practice facility. I think the guys are going to be real excited to come to work here every day.”

It will also serve as the new home rink for UNLV’s hockey club, which is going to Division I this season and has aspirations of becoming an NCAA varsity sport in the next couple of years. The Rebels will have their own locker room at City National Arena, and their season begins Sept. 15 at Arizona State with the home opener set for Sept. 22 against Colorado.

In addition, it will be home for youth hockey as the Junior Golden Knights will play there, and the two rinks will host tournaments starting in mid-September.

“We want the community to feel welcome here,” Craven said. “It’s going to be great for our Junior Golden Knights program to play here and to host teams from all over. We plan to have tournaments at every age level.”

As the ice was going in Tuesday, marking yet another important milestone for the project, Craven had his own private celebration.

“I had an extra cocktail after the final red line went in,” he said.

More Details on the Eataly Takeover at Park MGM

The resort main entrance will now face The Park

by Jul 28, 2017, 12:00pm PDT

The latest renderings unveiling the future of the Monte Carlo resort have been revealed during an earnings report for MGM Resorts International. And a local Town Board Meeting has provided some extra context for the massive transformation of the 21-year old property into the Park MGM and NoMad Las Vegas late next year.

Now confirmed, Eataly will fill approximately 40,000 square feet on the southern edge of the resort and The Park-facing side will become the main pedestrian entrance into the Park MGM casino. The current Las Vegas Boulevard frontage will be stripped of reminders of the Monte Carlo layout.

Guests will be encouraged to walk round the corner to this new entrance and even if they don’t head inside, they will be tempted by four, semi-permanent food carts operating near the front doors. New benches will added to permit al fresco dining.

Already promised from Eataly, a “vibrant marketplace with cafes, to-go counters, and sit-down restaurants interspersed with high-quality products from sustainable Italian and local producers,” known to include pasta dishes, pizza and a bakery. The future signage includes the phrase, “Alti Cibi,” an Eataly motto they translate as “high food.” MGM Resorts International Chairman and CEO Jim Murren confirmed during the earnings call that the new hotel will also have lofty ambitions, with daily room rates on the “upper end” of the MGM hotel portfolio.

The renderings show the new edge of the building curving its way toward the Strip, removing the still in business, 13,000-square-foot corner resident, Diablo’s. The computer drawings indicate both the “Mexican cantina” and neighboring tenants BLVD Creamery, Sambalatte and Minus5 are either in the way, or need to be artfully integrated into the Eataly space.

Get a Taste of Tales of the Cocktail at Royal Sonesta New Orleans

PHOTO: The Jazz Playhouse bar. (photo courtesy of Royal Sonesta NOLA)

Wrapping up its 15th year, Tales of the Cocktail is New Orleans’ premier summer event for lovers of libations. During a week of seminars, tastings, tours and more, Royal Sonesta New Orleans played host to visitors from around the globe as they learned the history and modern techniques of the cocktail.

Produced by the New Orleans Culinary and Cultural Preservation Society, this year’s Tales took place from July 18 through the 23rd.

Highlighting the week’s events were The New Orleans Cocktail Tours, hosted Tuesday – Saturday evenings and starting at Royal Sonesta New Orleans’ Le Booze, also known as ‘the’ whiskey destination on Bourbon Street. Guests took tours through cocktail history and explored the legendary bars that shaped how Americans drink.

In true Tales of the Cocktail fashion, the guided excursions kicked off with a round of Moscow Mules during the Pre-New Orleans Cocktail Tour Happy Hour with Mule 2.0 at Le Booze.

To brush up on cocktail knowledge, attendees participated in one (or several) of the seminars hosted in the property’s newly reimagined Grand Ballroom. There was something for everyone in the lineup of topics, including the state of the cocktail industry, the business development of a successful drink, the career progression from bartender to brand manager, a breakdown of vintage and forgotten cocktails and even the role of chemistry in the modernization of liquors.

After a day’s worth of cocktails, The Jazz Playhouse offered the perfect spot to ease into the mornings. On Wednesday and Thursday, Novo Fogo’s “Brazilian Zen Den” treated guests to the opportunity to blend their own smoothies with a bike-powered blender and enjoy a professional massage.

On Friday and Saturday, the Playhouse provided a Tanqueray Gin & Juice Morning Bar, to quench revelers’ thirst and start the morning off right before spending the day sipping and savoring in the history and art of cocktail creation.

And it wouldn’t have been a cocktail convention without tastings of the well-known, unique and newest liquors. The Fleur de Lis Suite hosted daily samplings of Wyborowa Wódka, Bulleit Frontier Whiskey, Woody Creek Distillers, Tia Maria and more. On Friday, the Conti Bourbon Balcony joined forces with Bacardi USA, offering visitors the opportunity to take part in The Sensory Lab, testing taste buds and understanding the differences in palates.

Royal Sonesta New Orleans’ Regal Suite also hosted daily attractions for guests with The Market at Tales. Offering Bitters Market, a Fleurty Girl retail apparel pop-up shop and the Shots of Inspiration bookstore, the Suite hosted a variety of presentations, book signings and samples Tuesday through Saturday.

Check back at TalesoftheCocktail.com to see what’s in store for next year’s Tales of the Cocktail, returning Summer 2018!

7 things you never knew about tequila – National Tequila Day, Monday July 24th

Maya Lewis,
July 19, 2017

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) – Monday, July 24th, marks the greatest holiday of them all – National Tequila Day. Tequila is an amazing margarita mixer, or a powerful shot on it’s own, but did you know you also can make diamonds out of the Jose Cuervo in your pantry? Here are seven crazy things you never knew about tequila.

Tequila is a mezcal

Tequila is made with at least 51 percent blue agave, which classifies it as a mezcal – or an agave plant based drink. However, all mezcals aren’t tequilas. Tequila has to be made with blue agave, while mezcals can be made with any agave plant.

Therefore, sometimes it’ll contain worms

Worms in tequila bottles are actually misplaced. They’re only supposed to appear in purely mezcal bottles. The worms are a larvae known as gusano de maguey that grow on different agave plants. Rumor has it, the gusano was first inserted in a finished bottle of mezcal because it changed the ‘spirit of the flavor.’

It is NOT beneficial to your health

In May, we ran a story on agave’s anti-inflammatory and immune boosting properties. Unfortunately, after distillation, the sugary calories in tequila negate any potential health benefits.

You can turn tequila into diamonds

Eighty-proof tequila has the perfect proportion of ethanol to water to create diamond films. If you’re looking to make diamonds at home, heat the mezcal into a vapor above 1,400 degrees and deposit it on a stainless steel tray. Voila!

Most of the tequila-making process is done by hand

According to The Guardian, the process of cultivating agave plants in the highlands of Mexico is slowly dying out in favor of industrialized production. Jimador’s, farmers tasked with harvesting these plants, cut open the core of the agave and remove surrounding leaves. The cores are then transported to a nearby distillery.
